Pres. Clinton Will Visit Thursday For A FREE Event
Tuesday, September 7th, 2010Governor Bredesen Endorses Mike McWherter
Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen has endorsed fellow Democrat Mike McWherter’s gubernatorial bid.
Bredesen endorsed McWherter at a Wednesday morning event at a Nashville restaurant. Bredesen had previously confirmed that he will be hosting a fundraiser for McWherter.
McWherter is the son of popular former Gov. Ned McWherter. McWherter, who owns a beer distributorship in Jackson, is the lone Democrat running for governor after four other serious candidates dropped out.
Three candidates are vying for the Republican nomination: Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam, state Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey of Blountville and U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp of Chattanooga.
The primary is Aug. 5.
McWherter’s “Mike Works Tour” Visits Danny Farrer’s Woodshop

“I’m not afraid to sweat,” McWherter quipped with the workers.
The son of former Tennessee Gov. Ned McWherter, the West Tennessee Democrat wore a buttoned shirt with the name patch “Mike” on the front, brown shoes with dried mud, work gloves, a straw cap with the silhouette image of a buck with antlers and goggles as he operated a framing nail gun.
Mike McWherter, who made the campaign stop as part of his Mike Works Tour, is focusing his campaign on jobs and hopes to reach out to voters hoping to find or keep work. He wants to build on the success of recruiting industry by current Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen and help the state do a better job of marketing opportunities available to small businesses.
“I am a small businessman,” said McWherter, a Jackson resident who owns an Anheuser-Busch beer wholesaling distributorship. “If you offer more tax incentives and tax credits to small businesses, you will create jobs in the state of Tennessee.”
Precision Wood Products owner Danny Farrer welcomed McWherter into his shop.
“I think any time you have a candidate who is interested in how the blue-collar people make their living and put food on the table, you are anxious to share the experience with him,” Farrer said. “Give me a guy who knows how to work, and I’ll teach him what to do.”
Farrer considers himself a loyal Democrat who’s campaigned for fellow party members from Murfreesboro: the late state Rep. John Bragg and former state Sen. Andy Womack. A large, mucky Womack campaign sign leans on a high out of the way wall in the wood shop.
Farrer met Mike McWherter’s father and now backs the son to take a turn as Tennessee’s next governor.
“His ideas about Tennessee’s business future impress me,” said Farrer, who’s confident that McWherter will move on industry initiatives launched by Gov. Bredesen. “It’s not enough just to have an education. You have to have someone to hire you once you graduate.”
Haslam Opposes Money For Small Biz, Accepts It For Pilot Oil
Tuesday, May 25th, 2010Republican Gubernatorial candidate Bill Haslam has gone on record opposing a plan to help grow Tennessee’s small businesses with state dollars, even though his own multi-billion dollar family business has taken in over half a million dollars in state subsidies. Does Haslam only support big business over small business? Democrat Mike McWherter calls Haslam’s hypocrisy out in an Associated Press story:
A state website listing payments to vendors is the source of McWherter’s data that shows about $537,000 was directed to Pilot between July 2007 and November 2009. The site does not provide detailed descriptions beyond that the money was spent in “Grants and Subsidies” or “Land” categories.
“It’s bad enough that Haslam opposes tax breaks for small business owners,” McWherter said. “Now we find out that his big oil company has received over half a million dollars in state subsidies in a little over two years.”
Haslam has been criticized by rivals for refusing to release his annual earnings from Pilot and over the potential conflict of interest presented by his ongoing part-ownership of the company.
The Wamp campaign in a release Tuesday said voters are “left in the dark” over Haslam’s stake in the state-regulated company that engages a lobbyist to represent Pilot’s interests with the state government.
“Those efforts, apparently, have paid off,” spokesman Sam Edelen said in the release. “Pilot Oil received more than a half-million dollars in state taxpayer money … to upgrade the company’s gas stations and increase its profits.”
