Rutherford County Democrats Quarterly Meeting

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

This past Saturday morning,  loyal democrats gathered at Rutherford County’s historic courthouse for our 2nd Quarter meeting. After a welcome from our chairman, Jonathon Fagan, the group heard from our treasurer, Matthew Smitty, who was pleased to report a great increase in the amount of money brought in over the last 3 months.

Will Fields, the parties’ Corresponding Secretary,  informed the group of upcoming events, like the 1st Annual Grow Tennessee Dinner to be held September 19th at 6p.m. on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University. With nearly 100 of the 300 available tickets gone in one day, we hope to make this a great event for Tennessee Democrats. It will be a great chance to hear the 5 candidates for the Governorship of our fair state speak about what they envision for Tennessee’s future. A sit down dinner will be served, and tickets are still available.  More info can be found in our calendar, or by calling 615-796-1472.

Pat McFadden gave a report of all the events that the party membership has attended over the last several months, including Juneteenth at Bradley Academy, International Street Fair, and several other successful events in all corners of the county,  which we will continue to do as much as possible. Please email any officer with community event info that you would like put on the sites community calendar.

We were very pleased to hear from Ashley Newton, with the Change that Works Campaign, regarding important events coming up with President Obama’s health care plan.

The Democratic party was also pleased to hear from Lisa Harrell, candidate for the office of County Clerk. Mrs. Harrell has served the county for several decades and those in attendance were proud to have her there to introduce herself and kick-off her campaign.

Republicans plan protest against extended jobless benefits as county unemployment reaches 10.3%

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

rcdpjobsJust as a growing number of Rutherford County families are feeling the brunt of significant job loses, Rutherford County Republicans are very busy planning yet another “tea party” to protest the help we need from the federal government.

County Republicans will take to the streets July 10 in Murfreesboro to protest an extension of unemployment benefits for the county’s 10.3% unemployed residents. The federal help is provided in President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

It’s worth reminding the voters of Rutherford County of Rep. Joe Carr’s (R-48) role in drafting legislation demanding Gov. Bredesen deny the extended unemployment benefits.

On July 10, Rutherford County Republicans will also loudly protest $1.6 billion in government loans to Nissan, $13.9 million for Rutherford County schools, enhanced health care for Rutherford County’s veterans, funding for three road projects in our county, and $30 million to retrain dislocated and low-income workers.

Learn more about the funded projects in Tennessee that Rutherford County Republicans will be protesting July 10.

Family Fun at International Folkfest!

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

This year’s International Street Festival on the Square in Murfreesboro included a Rutherford County Democratic Party tent where adults could register to vote, kids could get their faces painted, and folks could cool down with some complimentary lemonade. It was a lot of fun and a lot of work for our volunteers who braved triple-digit heat to make this a very successful visibility event. Thanks to all of our dedicated volunteers who made it a great success, and especially to Jill and Jo Collier who painted colorful designs on faces for 5 hours straight until the line finally ceased! And thanks to all (Chloe, Sydney, Chantho, Will, etc.) who helped inflate, string, and pass out the more than 100 balloons!

Gov. Bredesen addresses future leaders at MTSU

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Gov. Phil Bredesen spoke to more than 500 student leaders at the 63rd session of Volunteer Girls State. The event was hosted at MTSU here in Murfreesboro, TN yesterday.

Gov. Bredesen asked future leaders in the room to make public service a personal priority.

During the week, high school girls from around the state who will be seniors this fall debate the issues that the Tennessee Legislature faces and establish their own city, county and state governments.

“Make a life-long commitment to public service,” Bredesen told the students. “You have shown an interest in government by being here. Determine how you can best serve your community, state and country. Public service isn’t limited to elective office.”

He told the students that life won’t turn out the way you think it will.

“(But) chance is really your friend,” he said. “Take advantage of it, and use it to change.”

Rutherford County Democrats come together in Cannonsburgh

Over 150 Rutherford County Democrats came together tonight in Cannonsburgh in Murfreesboro, TN for guest speakers Sen. Andy Berke (D-10) and Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Chip Forrester. Lots of folks donated food and several raffle items, and the weather couldn’t have been nicer for an evening in May.

The RCDP fundraiser was held in an open air pavilion in Cannonsburgh, a living history museum of early Southern life in Murfreesboro. Many new faces as well as the very familiar shared a meal together and looked ahead to the 2010 elections.

If you were curious about the history of the venue for this event, here’s the Murfreesboro Post’s ‘Top 10′ things you should know about Cannonsburgh. There are a lot of people who helped make tonight’s event possible. Will Fields cooked the awesome food. Aaron Cerutti helped get the 15 tables and 150 chairs moved. Pat McFadden, Steve Cates, and many others helped set the tables. So many folks donated things for the baskets and the food. Chloe Cerutti raised $1000 with her raffle ticket sales alone. Margaret Scrivens helped at the door and in the kitchen. Kathy Ferris donated the lecturn and sound system to the party, made a lot of great potato salad and sold a lot of tickets.  Chantho Sourinho and Kathy Ferris tied for the most tickets sold (40 each).

These people and more demonstrated the power we have when we work together!

Tonight our treasurer, Smitty, challenged Democrats to think about the 2010 elections and think about what small thing you can do to help elect real public servants to represent the people of Rutherford County. One way is to give $10 a month to the Rutherford County Democratic party until the 2010 elections. It’s our 10 for ‘10 challenge, and we need your help to move Tennessee forward!

Rep. Bart Gordon (D-6) wins “Fastest Member of Congress”

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

bartgordonAccording to a report in the Daily News Journal, Rep. Bart Gordon won the “Fastest Member of Congress” award at the Capitol Challenge Charity race Wednesday in Washington.

Rep. Gordon ran three miles in 19 minutes beating one of the youngest members of Congress, freshman Aaron Schock (R-IL).

“This is a great event — not only do I love running, but the fact that it raises money for a great cause is why I have continued to participate over the last 20 years,” Gordon said afterward.

All money raised from entry fees for the 28th annual race will be donated to the District of Columbia’s Special Olympics. With more than 700 runners participating, an estimated $17,000 will be donated this year.

Gordon finished the race in 18 minutes and 49 seconds, off from his record-setting best of 16:59 in 1995. The second fastest runner from the U.S. House was Congressman Aaron Schock, R-Illinois, who finished in 20 minutes and 2 seconds.

Gordon is more than twice the age of Schock, who is 27.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This volunteer opportunity was originally scheduled for April 18, but the Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency changed the date to Saturday April 25 citing utility line safety concerns. The title of this post has been changed. Below is the original post.

If you would like to help those affected by the deadly Good Friday tornadoes here in Murfreesboro, save the date Saturday April 18. Click here to RSVP. Check back for specific time and location. Below is a message from the TNDP Chair Chip Forrester:

As you know, four tornadoes hit Rutherford County on Friday, April 10 leaving a trail of devastation and destruction. We have received calls and emails from Democrats across the state wanting to know what they could do to help. As a result, the TNDP has set up a Tornado Relief Service Day on Saturday, April 18. This is the day that the Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency has identified as the major cleanup day. We will receive information on the location and exact times later this week (plan on beginning early in the morning and working until late afternoon), but we wanted to let you know that we need your help.

If you would join in this effort, please go to the “Rutherford County Disaster Relief” event page to RSVP that you will attend, and you will receive up-to-date information on the location and meeting time as it becomes available.
