Leming to Annouce Jobs Platform on Wednesday

ben-and-sarahDemocratic Congressional candidate Ben Leming will discuss his jobs plan online 1 p.m. Wednesday, his campaign announced.

Residents wanting to watch the virtual press conference through a streaming video and audio on Ustream can go to the following site: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ben-leming. Members of the media and residents can go to the URL listed here to view the event where they can establish a log-in with the website to use the “chat” function and ask Leming questions. The press conference requires a “Ustream” account which is free and very easy to obtain.

Leming, who’s seeking the Democratic nomination for the 6th Congressional District in the upcoming Aug. 5 primary, will talk in detail about his approach to creating more jobs throughout Middle Tennessee and in turn boosting the country’s economy.

“Jobs are the single most important issue facing this district and this country,” Leming said in the news release. “Any representative in Congress needs to have a plan to address this issue. I’m excited to share my plan with Middle Tennesseans.”

If Leming wins the primary, he’ll face the Republican nominee and several independents competing in the Nov. 2 election. This will be the second press conference convened by Leming and a great opportunity for media from around the district to speak with him, the news release states.

The press conference will begin promptly at 1 p.m. with a statement by Leming. Media, supporters, and concerned citizens will then have an opportunity to have their questions answered live by the candidate.

Leming, a Marine Captain, Naval Academy graduate, and Iraq War helicopter combat veteran, is running for the seat vacated by retiring U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon, D-Murfreesboro.

Dear Friends,

At this time each year we celebrate the birth of our nation, and we commemorate the moment in time that America stood up and made a declaration to the world that shook the very foundations of established government. We honor the legacy of Thomas Jefferson and the men of the Continental Congress when they declared, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

This radical proposition, that all mankind should be free to pursue their individual passions, literally changed the course of world history. We celebrate not just that single moment in time or that stroke of a pen, but we honor and cherish the 234 years of trials, faults, and triumphs that followed.

The pursuit of freedom and liberty is never finished. Jefferson believed that each generation must take up the banner of liberty and begin the work anew to guarantee that all citizens enjoy those basic rights outlined in the Declaration of Independence.

America is not great simply because of the achievements of previous generations. We are great because the American spirit is always about looking forward. The great work of liberty is never finished. It is time for us to honor the past while continually looking forward with ambition, confidence, and pride to that great undiscovered future that we must forge together.

Now it is time for my generation to pick up the banner and charge forward on behalf of our country. We will fight to protect the rights of all Americans and must always ensure that the voiceless have a voice in their elected leaders. I am humbled by the support you have given me so far and I’m emboldened by your words of encouragement and your prayers. As we move forward, may the “spirit of ‘76″ inspire us to lead with courage and responsibility. Let’s fight together for Middle Tennessee and for America.

Ben Leming’s Complete Remarks on Oil Spill and Aftermath

Dear Friends,

Like all of you I have watched in horror over the last two months as the spill caused by an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon rig continues to dump millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. I’ve thought long and hard about this disaster and what it all means. Who should be held responsible? What should we do to prevent another catastrophe? I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you my thoughts on what must be done.

This disaster in the Gulf is largely the result of a big oil company taking big risks to make huge profits – all the while knowing the American taxpayers would have to pick up the tab if anything went wrong.

It’s not just the oil giants either. Just like the tragic explosion at the Masey Coal Mine in West Virginia, the collapse of AIG, Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns, and the abuses of Goldman Sachs, and the list goes on and on — to save America we’ve got to draw a line that says you cannot privatize the profits and socialize the risk.

It just stands to reason, you can’t put the money in your pocket when the gamble pays off and send the bill to the taxpayers when it doesn’t. That used to be common sense, but it’s not so common any anymore.

When I was a Marine in Iraq, we had to abide by a strict set of rules of engagement that regulated our behavior in combat. We could have cut corners, but the bottom line then was those safeguards were put in place to protect the innocent. We had a solemn duty to protect people that could not protect themselves.

BP had the same solemn duty to protect the innocent civilians along the Gulf Coast, and they failed. So, what should be done to ensure that BP pays for the expenses and claims associated with the clean up efforts while ensuring that future generations are protected from a similar disaster?

I want BP to set up real escrow accounts that are really accessible to the Americans whose lives are being ruined by bad corporate gambles. I want us to enforce sensible standards for offshore drilling. Like most Americans, I want us to do a lot of things — but I especially want us to change the culture in Washington and in the corporate boardrooms across America and around the world who’s strategy is to gamble with taxpayer’s money, reap the rewards if they win, and heap their losses on the backs of everyday Americans when they lose.

That’s wrong. It’s not American capitalism. It’s just the opposite. Capitalism is about risk and reward. These so-called economic giants think they can change the rules, but somebody’s got to tell them NO!

I’m just the guy to do it. I’ve spent my whole life fighting for America, and I won’t stop now. Thank you all again for your continued support.

Congressional candidate Ben Leming, a Marine Captain and Iraq War combat helicopter veteran, will travel the 6th District on Thursday speaking with fellow veterans about national security and veterans affairs.

Retired Marine Gen. John Castellaw, who has decided to endorse Leming, will join him. Castellaw, a Tennessee native, recently retired from active duty after rising to the rank of Lieutenant General.

The tour will include gatherings of veterans and military families at various locations throughout the 6th Congressional District. Leming and Castellaw will listen to the concerns of Middle Tennessee veterans.

Murfreesboro native Ben Leming, is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy. Leming’s last assignment in the Marine Corps was as a leadership instructor at the Academy. He is a Democrat running for the seat being vacated by retiring U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon in Tennessee’s 6th Congressional District.

Dear Friends,

Memorial Day Weekend for most folks is a weekend to go to the pool, the beach, have picnics, celebrate the end of school or graduation, or just enjoy time with our families. It is a weekend to celebrate the American way of life and we absolutely should. But every American should take pause and have a moment of quiet reflection to remember that some Americans will never again be able to celebrate this weekend. Some families have a member who ensured that they could enjoy this weekend but cannot be with them. Memorial Day is a day to remember those brave Americans throughout our history who sacrificed their lives so that all Americans can enjoy this weekend and every day that follows.

Having served in the Marine Corps, and as an Iraq veteran myself, I know all too well the sacrifices these brave young professionals have made. Each Memorial Day the toll is increased, my heart grows heavier, and I owe more thanks. Memorial Day has personal meaning to anyone who has served alongside those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Upon reflection of Memorial Day, I think of my close, personal friends that paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. I am reminded of the words of President Kennedy, who said, “There is no way to maintain the frontiers of freedom without cost and commitment and risk. There is no swift and easy path to peace in our generation. No man, or woman, who witnessed the tragedies of the last war, no man or woman who can imagine the unimaginable possibilities of the next war, can advocate war out of irritability or frustration or impatience.”

I am also reminded of the words of President Eisenhower. He said that, “For well he knew that to live for country is a duty, as demanding as is the readiness to die for it.” He went on to say, “the good citizen now, as always before, is called upon to defend the rights of others as he does his own; to subordinate self to the country’s good; to refuse to take the easy way today that may invite national disaster tomorrow; to accept the truth that the work still to be done awaits his doing.”

The service members throughout our history that gave their lives were and are that good citizen. We do not stand in awe of our warriors because of their actions alone. We are inspired by them because even in the face of fear and unspeakable horrors they found the courage to do the right thing and do what was best for their country and their fellow man. If only we could show such sacrifice and dedication to our country and fellow man in our daily lives, our lives and issues that in comparison can sometimes be leisure, trite, and petty. May we learn and value the meaning of their sacrifice.

For all of those who sacrificed for our nation throughout our history, you will never be forgotten. For the sacrifices you have made earned us more than just our freedoms, they give us reason to look at future conflicts and war with pause and make us question what is in the vital interest of our nation to spill the blood of her sons and daughters in her name. For we warriors are reluctant warriors. As Gen. Douglas MacArthur stated, “The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.”

War has a great cost. Although we have brave men and women who volunteer to pay that price, it is not theirs alone to pay. War is a nation’s burden to bear. This is why we must be prudent and thoughtful before engaging our resources, our treasury, and the blood of our countrymen to such an endeavor that is an unfortunate part of our human condition. However, when our nation calls, we will answer her. We will sacrifice to ensure that she may live and endure. We will sacrifice to protect the innocent. We will sacrifice to punish the wicked. We will sacrifice to attempt to bring peace to our world. We only ask that our sacrifices not be in vain. We ask that this nation honor those sacrifices by ensuring that we are a peace loving nation that strives to make this world a better place, both within and beyond our borders. Our fallen have made their sacrifice, now we must honor them and make ours. We must pledge to ensure that we continue to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity. They swore to defend and sacrifice to uphold these truths and so shall we.

For those who have gone before us, thank you. With great humility and solemn duty, we dedicate ourselves to the great task remaining before us all.

We will ensure that you will never be forgotten.

Former TN Senate Candidate Endorses Ben Leming For Congress

Bob Tuke, Marine veteran, former chairman of the Tennessee Democratic Party, and 2008 candidate for U.S. Senate, announced his endorsement of Ben Leming, candidate for Tennessee’s 6th Congressional District, during an afternoon press conference Tuesday in downtown Murfreesboro.

“Ben will bring the energy, focus, and determination of a Marine to Congress, “ Tuke said of Leming, who cannot actively campaign until his military service ends on May 1st.

“Ben is coming home to continue serving his country by running for Congress. We don’t have enough veterans in Congress, but with your help, we’re going to fix that,” Tuke said to a crowd of more than 40 supporters in front of Murfreesboro’s City Cafe.

The endorsement marks a significant milestone in Ben Leming’s bid to become the Democratic nominee for the congressional seat being vacated by Congressman Bart Gordon later this year.

An enthusiastic crowd of supporters came out to show their support for Ben’s campaign. One supporter carried a sign declaring, “Mission first! Politics last.” The crowd included many of Ben’s childhood friends, family members, and his high school wrestling coach.

Ben Leming, a Marine Captain and Iraq War helicopter combat veteran, has filed to run as a Democrat in Tennessee’s 6th Congressional District. Ben cannot actively campaign until he completes his active duty service on May 1st.
