Rep. Joe Carr (R-Lascassas) refuses to return thousands in bogus hotel and meal expenses

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Rep. Joe Carr (R-Lascassas) told Channel 4 today that he is refusing a request by voters to return thousands of dollars he recently told the Tennessean he “inadvertently” took from the tax payers and now claims he’s “entitled” to it.

Rep. Carr also told Channel 4 he took over $18,000 (more than any other lawmaker) in expenses to pay for hotel rooms, but no one seems to understand why he’d need that much money when he lives less than an hour from the state Capitol.

joebustedIn the video above, Rep. Carr couldn’t explain how he “inadvertently” drove himself to the bank to “inadvertently” cash 13 weeks worth of bogus meal and hotel expense checks.

Joe had the nerve to challenge his fellow big spending county Republicans to join him in not accepting anymore expense claims for the entire calendar year after we caught him with his hand in the tax payer’s pocket.

At the same time Rep. Carr was writing his own personal stimulus checks he’s now refusing to return, he had the nerve to try to pass a bill to deny extended unemployment benefits to residents in his district.

It’s time the voters of Lascassas introduce Joe Carr to the unemployment line come 2010.

RCDP Chairman Says Rep. Joe Carr Should Return The Cash

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Rep Joe Carr: I didn't know I took all that money.

Rep Joe Carr: I didn't know I took all that money.

(MURFREESBORO) - The Rutherford County Democratic Party (RCDP) made a request today of freshman Representative Joe Carr (R-Lascassas) to return thousands of dollars he recently told the Tennessean he “inadvertently” took from state tax payers. The money he said “he didn’t know” he took was in the form of numerous daily $171 bogus meal and hotel expense claims.

Rep. Carr has made more requests for meal and hotel expenses than any other lawmaker in the state House of Representatives, more than Memphis and Knoxville lawmakers with legitimate travel expenses. Rep. Carr lives in a neighboring county to the state Capitol, and it is unclear why he made so many requests for money he never spent on meals and hotel rooms.

“If Rep. Carr ‘inadvertently’ made over $18,000 in bogus expense requests, it’s hard to believe he then ‘inadvertently’ signed for the checks and ‘inadvertently’ drove himself to the bank to ‘inadvertently’ deposit the taxpayers’ money in his personal bank account,” said RCDP Chairman Jonathon Fagan. “Rep. Carr can easily fix this mess by coming clean and returning that money to the taxpayers.”

In the last legislative session, Rep. Carr pushed legislation demanding Gov. Bredesen deny his own constituents unemployment benefits (HJR - 0150). His efforts thankfully failed, while at the same time Rep. Carr was stuffing his bank account with thousands of dollars of his own private stimulus checks compliments of the very taxpayers who now find themselves without a job.

“Rep. Carr represents the brand of Republican that America sent packing to the hills in 2008 after plundering record surpluses of the Clinton years through historic record deficit spending. Unfortunately the hills they fled to are right here in Tennessee,” Fagan said. “And in 2010, it’s time Tennesseans finish the job and rid our state and our country from these tax and spend Republicans. It’s time to move Tennessee forward.”

Murfreesboro Tennessee is the birthplace of today’s modern Democratic Party, born in 1822 in what was then the State Capitol on Vine Street when Andrew Jackson declared his candidacy for President of the United States and was nominated by the Tennessee Legislature. The Democratic Party that was born then is now the oldest surviving political party in the world. Visit the Rutherford County Democratic Party website at www.rutherfordcountydemocrats.org.

Tax and Spend Republicans: Rep. Joe Carr “inadvertently” made bogus expense requests

Monday, August 17th, 2009
Rep Joe Carr: 'I didn't know I took all that money.'

Rep Joe Carr: I didn't know I took all that money.

Rep. Carr must think Rutherford County voters are stupid enough to believe he inadvertently requested expense money, inadvertently signed for the check and inadvertently drove himself to the bank to cash them.

This weekend’s Tennessean focused more on Rep. Joe Carr (R-48) out spending every single lawmaker in the House when it came to requesting $171 per day for hotel and meal expenses.

Rep. Carr had the nerve to tell the newspaper that he “inadvertently” requested more money for hotel and meal expenses than lawmakers who live in Memphis and Knoxville. Rep. Carr lives only 30 miles from the Capitol, and no one seems to know how he could have run up so many expenses.

“Among area lawmakers, Carr, a first-term lawmaker, claimed the most in per diem expenses in the first quarter of 2009, filing for $9,234 in charges. Carr said he inadvertently ran up the per diems while preparing for his first session in the state legislature.

“Because the state finances were in such a mess, after the election and before the session, I took several trips to Nashville,” Carr said. “I didn’t realize that every time I came to the legislature, they did a per diem.”

Carr said he did not become aware of the extent of the charges until media attention was called to it in the wake of Williams’ letter. He pledged to claim fewer days in the future.

During the last legislative session, Rep. Carr tried to deny extended unemployment benefits to residents in his district, but then he made bogus expense requests for hotels and meals he never purchased and got his own unemployment stimulus check compliments of Tennessee tax payers.

Now that the media caught him with his hand in the tax payer’s wallet, Rep. Joe Carr has promised to claim fewer bogus expense requests in the future. That must make the voters of Lascassas feel much better.

Congressman Gordon Announces Listening Schedule

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

bartgordonMURFREESBORO – To have productive conversations and obtain advice from residents of Tennessee’s Sixth Congressional District, U.S. Representative Bart Gordon has scheduled several discussion opportunities over the next two weeks – two district-wide Telephone Town Halls, three Face-to-Face office hour events, and two in-person Town Hall meetings, as well as a seniors-focused Telephone Town Hall and other possible call-in events. Each event will allow constituents to share concerns, ask questions, and communicate directly with Gordon.

“I scheduled each of these events in order to accommodate and hear from as many Sixth District residents as possible,” explained Gordon.

Gordon’s August schedule follows (note: additional events may be added):

· August 21: Two Telephone Town Halls – one at 11 a.m. CDT and another at 5:30 p.m. CDT (to register, visit www.gordon.house.gov or call 615-896-1986).
· August 24: Face-to-Face office hours, starting at 9:00 a.m. CDT, at the Patterson Park Community Center (521 Mercury Blvd., Murfreesboro, 37130).
· August 24: Town Hall meeting, moderated by the Daily News Journal, at 7:00 p.m. CDT in Murfreesboro (location, to be determined).
· August 25: Face-to-Face office hours, starting at 9:00 a.m. CDT, at the Putnam County Courthouse (300 E. Spring St., Cookeville, 38501).

· August 26: Town Hall meeting, moderated by Mike Toole of The News-Examiner at 7:00 p.m. CDT in Gallatin (location, to be determined).

“These call-ins, one-on-one discussion events and Town Hall meetings are just part of my efforts to better understand the concerns of the more than 700,000 constituents across the 15 counties I represent in the Sixth District,” added Gordon.

The two Telephone Town Hall events require no travel, and participation is toll free and easy. Registered constituents will be able to communicate with Gordon, ask questions live, and leave messages from the comfort of their homes.

Each Face-to-Face office hour event will offer constituents an opportunity to individually meet with Gordon and discuss any questions and concerns they may have. Gordon will meet with Sixth District residents on a first-come-first-serve basis.

The in-person Town Hall meetings will be moderated by Murfreesboro’s Daily News Journal and Gallatin’s News-Examiner, respectively. The moderators will call on attendees to ask questions or give advice to Gordon, as well as ensure that a constructive dialogue takes place over the course of each event.

In addition to these events, constituents are always welcome to stop by Gordon’s district offices. The Murfreesboro office is located at 305 W. Main Street; the Gallatin office is located at 100 Public Sq., Room B-100; and the Cookeville office is located at 15 S. Jefferson Avenue.

Tennessee’s Sixth Congressional District includes the following counties: Bedford, Cannon, Clay, DeKalb, Jackson, Macon, Marshall, Overton, Putnam, Robertson, Rutherford, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, and part of Wilson.

Tax and Spend Republicans: Rep. Joe Carr On The Dole

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009
Rep. Joe Carr takes over $18,000 for bogus hotel expenses when he lives 30 miles from the state Capitol!

Rep. Joe Carr takes over $18,000 for bogus hotel expenses when he lives 30 miles from the state Capitol!

QUESTION: Who is the member of the Tennessee House of Representatives who has taken more per diems than any other legislator on Capitol Hill?

ANSWER: It’s none other than Rutherford County’s Republican freshman Rep. Joe Carr (R-48). Here’s part of the Tennessee Democratic Party press release last week:

“Mr. Carr seems to be talking out of both sides of his mouth on this issue,” Forrester said. “Back home he rants about taxes, but he sure comes to Nashville often to collect his per diem, which reimburses lawmakers for their expenses while doing official business.

“Speaker Kent Williams even sent a letter recently to House members encouraging them to limit use of expense money they collect from the state.”

It must be embarrassing for Rep. Carr to know voters pay attention to these things. For months, Rep. Carr ignored his own party’s leadership warning him and other free -loaders to stop using per diems as his personal unemployment check, but that’s exactly what he’s done.

What’s worse is Rep. Carr doesn’t feel he owes anyone an explanation.

Like many of his constituents, Rep. Carr has fallen on hard times in this 1 1/2 year long Bush recession. But instead of trying to help his district recover from the results of 8 years of failed conservative economic policy, Rep. Carr drafted legislation demanding Gov. Bredesen deny extended jobless benefits to the growing unemployed in Lascassas when they needed it the most. Rep. Carr told listeners on 1450 WGNS that extending their unemployment benefits “would cost too much of the tax payer’s money.”

Now we find out that Rep. Carr, who has no job himself, has been taking his own personal stimulus check directly from tax payers through bogus $171 a day per diem requests meant to pay for hotel and meals for out of town legislators. Rep. Joe Carr claimed more than $18,000 for hotels and meals, even though he lives 30 miles from Nashville. More than $7,000 of that was since July when nothing is going on at the Capitol!

Don’t take our word for it. You can view the public record posted for everyone to see right on the state legislature’s website.

Lascassas deserves an honest, hard working Representative who doesn’t spend as much tax money as Memphis legislators who actually need hotel rooms. The voters ought to ask Rep. Carr what on earth he did with their money.

Bill Seeks End to Radioactive Dumping in Rutherford County

Monday, August 10th, 2009

clean-logo1NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Today, Families for a Clean Tennessee announced a statewide campaign aimed at encouraging state legislators to commit to supporting Senate Bill 687, a bill aimed at ending the process of Bulk Survey for Release.

Bulk Survey for Release, or BSFR, is a process that allows nuclear waste from across the United States to be dumped in ordinary Tennessee landfills. SB 687 was introduced by Sen. Marrero (D-30) during this year’s legislative session but did not receive a hearing or a vote in committee. The bill is eligible for consideration in 2010.

The pledge campaign comes just days after InsiderAdvantage and the Southern Political Report announced that while polling for the upcoming Tennessee gubernatorial election, they uncovered that more than 80 percent of respondents were “very concerned” that nuclear waste could be dumped in ordinary landfills in Tennessee. [Access the Southern Political Report Article]

“This issue is potential political dynamite,” said InsiderAdvatnave CEO Matt Towery. “This is not a Democrat or Republican issue as best I can see…what makes this a potential bombshell issue is that most in the state don’t realize nuclear dumping in landfills is allowed, and when they hear it is, they are shocked. When you add to the equation that Tennessee landfills are taking other states’ waste, residents get really hot,” continued Towery.

Families for a Clean Tennessee, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting Tennessee has mailed a copy of Towery’s poll along with a pledge card to every elected legislator in Tennessee. The group hopes that after legislators review the independent poll, they will pledge to support SB 687 by signing and returning the pledge card.

“The InsiderAdvantage poll reveals that more than 80 percent of Tennessee voters are concerned about the BSFR process and I believe our elected officials have to pledge to support SB 687 or face potential opposition in 2010,” stated Harvey Fischer, Chairman of Families for a Clean Tennessee. [Access the Pledge Sent to Tennessee Legislators]

Specifically, the InsiderAdvantage poll uncovered:

82.6 percent of likely voters oppose dumping nuclear waste in ordinary commercial landfills in Tennessee, while nearly 90 percent believe nuclear waste should be disposed of in long-term isolation facilities.
More than 75 percent of likely voters-both Democrats and Republicans– are more likely to support a candidate for Governor that is opposed to nuclear dumping and the BSFR program.
Nearly 60 percent are more likely to support a legislative candidate that is opposed to nuclear dumping and the BSFR program.
More than 50 percent have stated they would actively work for the election of any candidate from either party that opposes the dumping of nuclear waste in Tennessee landfills.
More than 50 percent support Senate Bill 687, and more than 60 percent are more likely to vote for candidates that support Senate Bill 687.
63.5 percent believe that under no circumstance should nuclear waste be dumped in Tennessee.

Families for a Clean Tennessee will provide a list of legislators that have pledged to support
SB 687 on their Web site http://www.cleantennessee.org as pledge cards are returned.

Tax and Spend Republicans: Rowland, Carr, Ketron and Tracy top the list

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

whattheycost2

The state legislature may be out of session but according to local media reports Rep. Joe Carr (R-48) has been spending a lot of summer days at the Capitol claiming per diems, a day’s pay for showing up. Rep. Carr was at the top of the list when it came to which Republican requested the most per diems after the session was already over.

It’s gotten so bad that Republican House Speaker Kent Williams issued a letter to all Representatives asking them to follow some basic guidelines to cut per diem requests. You can read the letter here.

Rep. Carr must not have gotten the memo because he kept requesting money all summer when he thought no one would be watching. Rep. Carr didn’t think twice about pushing his own bill in the last session demanding Gov. Bredesen not accept federal stimulus funds for extended jobless benefits for his district’s growing unemployed. Now that Rep. Carr needs a stimulus of his own, he’s off to collect his directly from the tax payers.

We’ll take a closer look at Rep. Carr’s summer per diem requests later, but first, let’s look at how much our county’s delegation is costing us.

What the list of our county delegation’s per diem requests for the entire session factually shows the voters of our county is a record of spending on the part of the Republican delegation. Rep. Donna Rowland (R-34) doesn’t look that bad on the surface, but then she’s got a lot of making up to do for being deemed the most expensive Republican in the entire House for filing resolutions honoring everything from campaign contributors to her new boyfriend.

The list below does not include per diem requests made after the session, which ought to put Rep. Carr over the top.

They lost the confidence of Americans after 8 years of failed policy

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

And now they’re back. They don’t want Nissan to have $1.6 billion in government auto loans to hire 1,000 workers to build the electric car of the future. They don’t want local construction companies bidding on local ARRA road projects to have a dime of their tax money. They don’t want enhanced health care for our veterans. They don’t want extended jobless benefits for our county’s growing unemployed or the millions being invested in our roads and schools.

What they want is to keep the status quo for the insurance companies because that’s worked so well for our families. Oh yeah, and they want to see the President’s birth certificate. That about sums up their plan to lift us out of their 8 years of failed ideas and policies.

Gordon Bill Protects Social Security and Veterans Benefits

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

bartgordonWASHINGTON – Congressman Bart Gordon has introduced legislation aimed at protecting the bank accounts of Americans receiving Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Veterans benefits. Federal law prevents these benefit payments, which are the sole source of income for many seniors and veterans, from being seized by creditors to pay past-due debt. However, a loophole has enabled creditors to obtain these funds when directly deposited into a beneficiary’s bank account.

“The Treasury Department is spending $50 million a year encouraging seniors, veterans and the disabled, who rely on government assistance, to sign up for direct deposit payments,” explained Gordon. “At the same time, financial institutions are being forced by creditors to freeze the bank accounts of beneficiaries, preventing them from accessing their money.”

Since 2007, the U.S. Treasury Department has been drafting regulations to close this loophole and prohibit the freezing of accounts that contain these direct deposit benefit payments. However, the rules have yet to be formalized – a process that could take a year or longer. Gordon’s legislation, the Illegal Garnishment Prevention Act (H.R. 3366), would prohibit the Treasury Department from using funds to promote the use of direct deposit among Social Security, SSI and Veterans beneficiaries until the Department implements regulations protecting their bank accounts.

“According to a recent report, from 2006-2007, more than $170 million was seized from bank accounts that included Social Security benefits and other deposits,” said Gordon. “When these bank accounts are frozen, millions are left with nothing to pay their day-to-day living expenses. The Treasury Department shouldn’t be promoting direct deposit payments until financial institutions and creditors are prohibited from seizing benefit payments.”

A companion-version of Gordon’s bill has been introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senator Herb Kohl. Gordon is committed to working with his House and Senate colleagues to see that regulations protecting the funds of Social Security, SSI and Veterans beneficiaries are implemented as soon as possible.

Murfreesboro Tea Party organizer has over $80,000 in tax liens

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Yet another local Tea Party organizer in Middle Tennessee is exposed for not paying taxes.

(MURFREESBORO, Tenn.) - Christian Hidaglo hates paying taxes. He hates them so much he organizes local Republicans to protest paying them in what they call Tea Parties. Now documents show the Tea Party organizer owes over $80,000 in state and federal tax liens stretching over a 10-year period.

For several years, Hidalgo has not paid portions of both state and federal taxes, forcing both the state and federal government to spend time and resources to issue several liens against his property and assets. Government authorities can seize property and assets of individuals with liens for unpaid taxes.

Where he intends to get the money he owes our government is anyone’s guess, but you can calculate below what your share of his slack will be if he decides to leave you and me on the hook:

Click ( page 1, page 2, page 3, page 4 ) to view the state and federal tax liens against Murfreesboro Tea Party Organizer Christian Hidalgo.

At Tea Party protests organized by Hidalgo, protesters are encouraged to demand the government give back tax money their own leader never bothered to pay in the first place. Hidalgo actually has the nerve to claim to support our troops in a time of war, while blatantly denying them his share that pays for their security and their health care. And his protest doesn’t end there.

Hidalgo readily admits on his Murfreesboro business’s website that he has “no formal business education.” What his clients don’t know is that their businesses help fund and share a server with a website run by Hidalgo that operates in violation of federal election law.

The website, DumpBartGordon.com, is registered to Christian Hidalgo and is hosted on the same Navigation Advertising server that some of his company’s clients share, exposing respected local companies to legal risk. Federal rules explicitly state guidelines for websites that target individual candidates for federal office, including rules for individual and corporate involvement.

Hidalgo is the second local Tea Party organizer to have been found not paying taxes. National Tea Party organizer and Williamson County Republican Michael Patrick Leahy was recently exposed as having over $100,000 in tax liens and court ordered judgements against him.
